Phelin’s life is marked by extreme poverty. Her parents work as day laborers, but steady work is difficult to find. They struggle to provide basic necessities for Phelin and her five siblings. Many days, the family eats only one meal, and sometimes they go to bed hungry. Education is Phelin's best hope for a brighter future.
