"Joseph." Mercy knows her father's name but little else. He abandoned the family a few years ago, leaving them to struggle in absolute poverty. Mercy's mother is sick and jobless. She cannot find enough food for her three hungry children. Mercy is behind in school, but she is a smart little girl and more than capable of catching up with her peers.
