Melissa’s father left shortly after she was born, and his whereabouts are unknown. Her mother is in poor health and is often in and out of the hospital, which prevents her from working. As a result, Melissa lives with her mother and her elderly grandmother. Her grandmother sells produce on the roadside, but her income is not enough to meet the needs of the household. Education is Melissa's only hope to break free from the cycle of poverty.
