Leokadia is falling behind in school because her family depends on odd jobs and small-scale farming to meet basic needs. Her father searches for work each day, but when jobs are scarce, the family struggles to put food on the table. As a result, Leokadia has been sent home from school many times for unpaid fees. Her mother also farms to support the household, but unpredictable drought and flooding often damage their crops and reduce what the family can earn.
