Joyce’s life is filled with hardship. Her father struggles with substance abuse and has difficulty keeping steady employment. Her mother works odd jobs, but income is inconsistent and often not enough to meet the family’s needs. Many nights, Joyce and her family go to bed hungry. Education is Joyce's best opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.
