Joy's life changed after her father was killed during post-election violence. Following his death, her mother developed a long-term mental health condition, and despite efforts to seek treatment, her condition did not improve. Joy and her siblings are now under the care of their grandmother, who struggles to meet the needs of the entire family. When she can find houses to clean she makes around fifty cents per day.
