Josiah was left in the care of his grandparents after his parents abandoned him. His grandfather farms a small plot of land, but due to his advanced age and harsh weather conditions, he is unable to work for long hours. His grandmother helps on the farm and cares for Josiah, but she too is elderly and unable to work for extended periods. Education is Josiah's best hope for a life filled with possibility.
