Joel is blessed to live with both of his parents. His father, Vincent, is a carpenter, though work is often hard to find. His mother, Doris, does not work outside the home. Joel has a younger brother named Kerry Mark. The family struggles to make ends meet and cannot afford to pay for Joel’s education. Despite these challenges, Joel is a bright and determined student who especially enjoys his math class.  Education is Joel's only hope to break free from the cycle of poverty.
