Joel’s father passed away in a road accident, leaving his mother to care for him alone. His mother is a street vendor, but her income is unreliable. Despite her best efforts, she struggles to provide for all of his basic needs, and many nights they go to bed hungry. Education is Joel's best hope for a bright future.
