Joel’s young life has been shaped by hardship and abandonment. His father left the family, leaving them without financial support. His mother works in the fields in exchange for food, but despite her efforts, she is only able to provide one meal a day for the family. Many times, they go to bed hungry. Because of the family’s limited access to food, Joel suffers from malnutrition and is in poor health. Education is Joel's best hope to break free from the cycle of poverty.
