Ishmael’s family has experienced significant hardship due to substance abuse and violence toward the family. His mother separated from his father to provide a safer environment for her children. Ishmael's mother works hard to raise him and his three siblings, but there are times when the family has only one meal a day or goes to bed hungry. Education is Ishmael's only hope to break free from the cycle of poverty.
