Centrine’s father was killed by SLDF fighters during the war on Mt. Elgon. They also killed the family’s cattle, taking away their livelihood. Centrine’s mother has no formal education or job training and is without a source of income. She struggles to provide enough food for her eight children and most times, they go to bed hungry. Education is Centrine's only hope to break free from the cycle of poverty.
