Brandy has a painful life story. She has never known her father. Her mother abandoned the children a few years ago to remarry. Now Brandy is being raised by her widowed grandmother, who is in her old age and in very poor health. Her legs have badly swollen, which requires her to take bed rest most of the time and have medication that drains all of the family's income. They are stricken by poverty and miss multiple meals.
