Ruth's family is in a cycle of poverty. Her father had to drop out of school in eighth grade because he could not afford the fees. He was in an accident and now can only walk with a stick, which means few people hire him for manual labor. Ruth's mother farms their small garden for the family's only food. Ruth is the oldest of eight children, and her dream is to complete her schooling so that she can turn around and help her family one day.
