When Kelvin's mother learned she was sick, her husband abandoned the family and has not been seen since. Now Kelvin, his older brother, and their mother live in a small, single-room mud house in a rural village outside of Malindi, Kenya. Kelvin's mother is too sick to maintain any kind of a job, so they farm their small garden and rely on well-wishers for any food. It has been a true challenge for either of the boys to attend school.
