Both of Mishel's parents were killed by rebel fighters during the clashes on Mt. Elgon. The children were witness to the terrible atrocities that happened. The gang eventually stole the family's livestock and fled, leaving nine young children behind. Now Mishel and her siblings live under the care of their great-grandmother, who is in her nineties and is in very frail health. Mishel is in poor health due to chiggers and malnutrition. She needs a helping hand.
